Hachiku

Australia/Germany

Hachiku is the dreamy indie art-pop project of globetrotter Anika Ostendorf (born in Michigan, raised in Germany, now based between Melbourne & Berlin). After landing on Courtney Barnett’s queer-run label Milk! Records and embracing its DIY, community spirit, Hachiku quickly became a fixture in Melbourne’s experimental scene.

Her debut album I’ll Probably Be Asleep (2020) sold out and turned heads with kaleidoscopic pop that made the world feel a little less dreary. Her sophomore, The Joys of Being Pure at Heart (2025), expands that sound with the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra and harpist Mary Lattimore, tracing themes of self-compassion and vulnerability.

Praised by NPR, Bandcamp, Clash and NME, Hachiku has toured internationally with Courtney Barnett, The Breeders, José González and Snail Mail. If exploratory pop still has a future in the age of AI bands, it probably sounds like this.
